From September 2020, it became a statutory requirement that all schools in England teach Relationship and Health Education as a fundamental part of the curriculum. 

This September (2026), we have adopted a new award winning scheme of learning called '1decision' to enhance our Personal Social and Health Education offer; this scheme also covers Relationships too. We are really excited to deliver what this scheme brings with its interactive videos and teaching materials to aid and further support discussions in the classroom. 

We believe that our offer at Derry Hill School is really strong and this additional resource will ensure all pupils' continue to receive a broad and ambitious curriculum offer. 

Intent

Our vision statement and vision vessel reflects our desire to provide the best possible education, opportunities and environment for all who are part of our school. We believe that our school should be an inclusive community where ALL aim high, achieve well and develop self-confidence, positive values and beliefs, a sense of community, well-being and caring attitudes towards others. PSHE is central to this ethos and equips children with the knowledge, skills and strategies to live healthy, safe and responsible lives.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum covers all areas of the subject. One timetabled PSHE lesson per week is taught throughout the school by the class teacher or by HLTA’s. The school utilises the 1 Decision PSHE scheme to structure our PSHE programme. In the Foundation Stage, PSHE is an integral part of the topic work covered during the year. There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the discreet lesson, including assemblies where a range of themes are covered.  The school has an active school council who work to improve our school. There are joint activities between year groups including cross curricular days whereby the children are grouped into their house teams. The school actively participates in ‘Healthy Eating Week’ and ‘Anti-Bullying week,’ and our older children buddy up with younger children to help them settle into school life quickly.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Sex and relationships education is lifelong learning about sex, sexuality, emotions, relationships and sexual health. It involves acquiring information, developing skills and forming positive beliefs, values and attitudes.

Aims

During Key Stages 1 and 2, learners gradually build on the skills, attitudes and values, knowledge and understanding that they have started to acquire and develop in the Early Years/ Foundation Stage. SRE education offers learning opportunities and experiences which reflect the increasing independence and physical and social awareness of learners as they move through the primary phase. They learn skills to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and keep themselves safe. It is important to remain flexible as events such as bereavements or other major events might require learning to be moved between Key Stages. SRE education assists pupils to cope with the changes at puberty, introduces them to the wider world and enables them to make an active contribution to their communities.

Sex and Relationships Education will contribute to the foundation of PSHE by ensuring that all children:

• Develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships
  • Develop their self-esteem and sense of responsibility
  • Are able to name parts of the body and describe how their bodies work
  • Can protect themselves and ask for help and support
  • Are prepared for puberty
